Pick Out Something Comfy But That You Also Would Feel Cool In
This website is officially dangerous for me; it's keeping me from all kinds of serious work that I need to do. It is a distraction.
Yeah, I'll get to the work in a moment. First, I want to talk a little about one of my friends.
I met Sheila about 10 years ago, when I was in college. She's married to a terrific chap named Gabe (he's the one who let me drive his Cooper Mini) and they live here in Atlanta with their feral cat, Little Stevie Ray Nicks. Sheila works full-time as an illustrator (and she does some really exceptional work. Go ahead. Click here and look at her portrait of PJ Harvey on the third row and then tell me that she doesn't kick ass. Just try it).
So sometimes when Sheila is at home during the week, dutifully working on her paintings all day long, she and I will start e-mailing each other madly. I love it when this happens.
Besides the fact that she is a top-notch illustrator, the thing you need to know about Sheila is that she is real, real kooky for Owen Wilson. She fantasizes about meeting him and hanging out with him. You know Owen Wilson, don't you? Don't get him confused with his handsome brother, Luke Wilson:

Right. She likes the guy on the left, the one with the funny drawl and the broke-down nose. (If you've ever seen one of his movies, you know how startlingly crooked that nose is.)
Today, Sheila sent me this message. It reminded me why I love her so.
Hey, Beth finally saw Bottlerocket, her first wilson/anderson movie and she thinks luke is hot!
i agree, but i'm especially charmed by his scar faced brother. I would like it to go like this:
Hey Sheila,
What's up? Man, we've REALLY missed you! Do you know how much we like you? A LOT. You and Gabe are so funny and warm and just VIBRANT to be around and we just miss that energy. The chemistry we all have together is overwhelming and it's too bad we live in different stes, in fact, i was talking with Owen the other day and he mentioned that he and Luke were talking about how they wouldn't mind moving to Georgia to be near "family" (you and Gabe) and that Luke was actually interested in a house down the street from you guys (shhh! I'm not supposed to tell!). If they come down, then I'm coming, too. We just need to be near you.
I was wondering if you could give me Gabe's e-mail address. We wanted to collaborate on this next film and give him a large part. It's top secret right now, but the female lead just may be written for a special tall long haired beauty who lives in Georgia....
Gosh i can't stand this...I'm just going to have to pick up the phone and call you guys if nothing more than just to hear your voice on the answering machine... it's hell being away from people you care so much for... Hell, what are you guys doing next week? Can I fly you two out here?
Let me know,
Love,
Wes [this is director Wes Anderson, of course]
That's what i would love. i know we'd be friends with them.
i don't care about hollywood and all that barbie doll land glitz and fakeness. Just put me in touch with wes and owen and we'll hook up later on in the evening with luke and it'll be GREAT.
i would of course have you come along also. so pick out something comfy but that you also would feel cool in.
love sheila
This is why it's good to have friends like Sheila. Because they make you laugh out loud in the middle of a completely stressful and un-fun work day.
OK, so I'll be back later. I'm going to go pick out something comfy and cool to wear when I meet the Wilson boys.

Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who read too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking. Albert Einstien
A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.
George Bernard Shaw

What would you like for your backdrop when VH-1 comes to interview you? I favor a soft sheer gauzy fabric backdrop, with a couple of candles casting odd shadows on the wall.
