Haircut

Women's haircuts are such a rap. Here in Atlanta you pay somewhere around $40 for a relatively decent haircut. And my gosh, that is steep. Or am I a cheapskate?

I once asked my stylist what you pay for a decent haircut in New York City. She said $100 is a fair price for a good cut in New York.

People! That is nuts!

But, like that old commercial suggests, a haircut is like a piece of clothing you gotta wear every day. Might as well pick something you like. Once I resentfully cough up the dough for a decent haircut I find myself feeling a little more cheerful about life. Also, about five pounds lighter after losing all that ragged, heavy hair.

Before: Sad.

After: Glad.

Also, $45 poorer, plus tip... ugh. Oh, let's not think about that part of it. Let's just think about the Salon Freshness and the new bounce in my step. Right?

If there's one thing you can say about mankind
There's nothing kind about man
You can drive out nature with a pitch fork
But it always comes roaring back again. —
Tom Waits

A whole slew of CDs I checked out from the public library, including but not limited to:

The Grass Is Blue — Dolly Parton

Slow Turning — John Hiatt

Colossal Head — Los Lobos

Blood Money — Tom Waits

Step Right Up — covers of Tom Waits songs

20 Greatest Hits — Loretta Lynn

X — Def Leppard (no need to tell my mom about this last one, okay?)

My classmates and I whispered the odd rhymes to each other between classes, and passed notes referencing swich licour. — November 15, 2001
