By the Numbers
This is the kind of journal entry you get when I really want to write a good journal entry but I don't have time because I'm at work.

1. At your office building, the morning security guard thinks you work the first shift. The afternoon security guard thinks you work the second shift. The night security guard thinks you work the night shift...
2. You bump into an old acquaintance on the street by your office, and she inquires about your new interest in Goth
3. Your boss stops by your desk to ask you how things are going, and you can only respond by singing "Old Man River" (true story)
4. A small crowd gathers outside your office each night to place bets on your sprint to the FedEx drop box
5. Your husband attempts to make dinner
Five Things that Made Me Smile This Week
1. Tom coming in the door tonight with an armful of stunning purple iris, a gift from Nikolle's garden
2. Making yet another mix CD for Rob
3. Arriving home from work late last night to discover Tom and José at the kitchen table, bottles of beer at their elbows, deep in concentration over a game of chess
4. This, especially Coach Z's "Hip Hop Dance" video
5. The thought of visiting New York with my sister-in-law next weekend. Also, the thought of my co-workers not having my new cell phone number as I'm visiting New York with my sister-in-law next weekend
Three Dates I've Had to Break This Week Because of Working So Damn Much
1. Plans for dinner with Leah on Monday night
2. Plans for a haircut on Tuesday night
3. Plans for sleep tonight
Three More Little Hints That You Might Be Working Too Damn Hard

2. Management starts requiring everyone to sign up for bathroom breaks three days in advance
3. The cleaning crew comes by every couple of days to vacuum and dust you
Two Things I'm Kind of Worried About Right Now
1. How many pairs of shoes to pack for New York
2. How to tell if I am getting an ulcer
Two More Little Hints That You Might Be Working Too Damn Hard
1. You are diagnosed with a tapeworm because of all the fast food you've been eating while working at your desk
2. You attempt to teach your tapeworm PhotoShop

Everybody prays whether [you think] of it as praying or not. The odd silence you fall into when something very beautiful is happening or something very good or very bad. The ah-h-h! that sometimes floats up out of you as out of a Fourth of July crowd when the sky-rocket bursts over the water. The stammer of pain at somebody else's pain. The stammer of joy at somebody else's joy. Whatever words or sounds you use for sighing with over your own life. These are all prayers in their way. These are all spoken not just to yourself but to something even more familiar than yourself and even more strange than the world.
